Prof. Hon Ki TSANG

Professor Hon Ki Tsang was born in Hong Kong. He studied Engineering at the University of Cambridge, graduating with the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and PhD degrees in 1987 and 1991 respectively. After Cambridge, he completed a SERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the School of Physics, University of Bath in September 1993 before returning to Hong Kong to take up the position of Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering (with academic title of Assistant Professor) position at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).  He also joined Shaw College in 1993. He was substantiated and promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. In 2001 to 2003 he took leave from CUHK to develop and commercialize the technology of silicon photonics as R&D director of Bookham Technology plc.  He returned to CUHK and was promoted to Professor in 2003. He served as Chairman of the Department of Electronic Engineering between 2010 and 2016 and Associate Dean (Research) from 2018 to 2023. He is currently the Wei Lun Professor of Electronic Engineering and the Dean of Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently a member of the Assembly of Fellows of Shaw College, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Shaw College and Associate Head of Shaw College. Tsang’s research expertise is in silicon photonics for applications in high-speed optical communications, 3D optical imaging.  He has published over 270 peer reviewed journal papers. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of Optica.  He is also a FIDE Chess master and a past chess champion of Hong Kong.
